Javier Bardem is Roland
Javier Bardem has signed on to star in movie and TV versions of Stephen King's smash hit Dark Tower books, according to reports.

The Spanish-born Oscar winner will play the role of Roland Deschain in Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's adaptation of the seven-novel series.

Three movies will be made with each one followed by a TV miniseries, reports the New York Post.

In the books Deschain travels through an Old West-style landscape in search of the mythical Dark Tower to save the rest of civilisation.

Shooting on the first movie is expected to go into production in September and will be directed by Howard.

'Bardem has signed on to the first movie and the miniseries, but the plan is that he will star in all three movies and each of the TV series,' an insider told the New York Post.

'It is a massive deal for any actor, but Bardem was always their first choice.

I mean it's not that I don't like Bardem but I still can't see Roland in him:( I agree with the popular opinion saying "we need a younger Eastwood for Roland!"

Wow. What's with all the Javier hate? The guy can act, I've seen it. Also, you do know Hollywood has awesome special effects people, yeah?

This is like saying that Elijah Wood shouldn't play a hobbit because he's too tall.

I'll reserve judgement on the choice of the actor.. but I did love him in 'No Country for Old Men'.. but I have never really like any of Kings adaptations to screen... there is something always lost in translation from book to the screen.. something our imagination makes up for when reading...

But I will admit.. that I will probably watch it just to see how it pans out.
